Bike adventure on Madeira

Cycling between sun and sea

Madeira is an interesting destination for bikers. Due to the countless forest roads, trails and Levada ways, you find terrains for all levels. Due to the mild climate, there are also in winter ideal conditions for biking.

Cross country bike week

We choose 5 tours from our program. Here we take care, that you discover as much as possible on the island: the north east, the mountains, the highplateau and the sea. You can book extra tours anytime. Our tours can be adjusted or changed in order to your level.

You can choose between 27,5”, 29” fullys or the e-bike fully. You can do all our tours either with the mountainbike fully or the e-mountainbike fully.

The tours last about 5 hours. We drive partly on small side roads, but mainly off road. The length is about 30 and 50 kilometers, the differences in height are within 450 and 1600 meters of altitude.

We pick you up at the airport and take you to your booked hotel. All the hotels are just a few minutes by foot from our office or the Bikestation.

At the greeting you will meet your guide, try your bike and obtain information about the week (including your travel documents with a description of your week and the tours you will do).

A selection from our bike program:

Day 1: Bem vindo - welcome

Arrival in Madeira: We pick you up at the airport, take you to your booked hotel and then meet you at the bike station, where you choose the bike for your vacation week. For a welcome poncha and meeting, you can go straight to the small local bar Rodrigues.

Day 2: Portela - Fajã dos Rolos

The minibus takes us to Fajã dos Rolos. The trails are short, steep sections through laurel and eucalyptus forest. Always with a view of the highest mountains in Madeira. Along a levada it goes to Camacha and from there back to Caniço de Baixo.

Day 3: Paul da Serra – Ribeira da Janela

The bus takes us to the Paul da Serra plateau. Here we have fantastic views of the valley of Ribeira Brava and São Vicente and the Massif Central. We bike under laurel trees that are several hundred years old. Then the descent to Ribeira da Janela follows. From there, take the bus back to Caniço de Baixo.

Day 4: Pico do Arieiro - to the third highest peak

The transfer bus takes us to the Abrigo do Pastor at about 1000 m. From there it goes steadily uphill through the ecological park to the third highest peak in Madeira, the Pico do Arieiro 1818 m. The view is fantastic and the descent makes up for it. With a view of Funchal, downhill passages, trails and levada trails it goes back to Caniço de Baixo.

Day 5: Free

You can go on another bike tour, take an enduro day, go to Funchal or do one of the many other activities. Try something you always wanted to do like canyoning, coastering, tandem flying or stand up paddle. You can also enjoy the day by the swimming pool and relax.

Day 6: Santana - deep gorges and spectacular coastal descent

We start in Guindaste or Cortado in Faial and we cycle up to Levada do Caldeirão Verde and on through Parque Florestal das Queimadas. Many viewpoints with beautiful views reward the effort. Past the Casa de Colmo in Santana, our path leads downhill on the first path, which united all villages in Madeira, to the sea.

Day 7: Chão da Lagoa - Pico da Suna

Our tour starts at Terreiro da Luta, from where we enjoy a wonderful view over São Gonçalo. From now on we drive steadily up to the Montado do Pereiro through the Parque Ecológico do Funchal and on to the plateau of Chão da Lagoa. The route to the Pico do Suna is a technical challenge for the bikers. We are compensated by driving along the Levada da Serra do Faial and a rapid descent to Caniço de Baixo.

Day 8: Adeus - goodbye

We take you to the airport or you start your extended vacation.

Portela: On narrow paths to the northeast

On forest roads and forest trails we ride through laurel and eucalyptus forest, on a single trail until we reach Portela. Further on, along the Levada we ride to Camacha and from there back to Caniço de Baixo.

Paul da Serra - Ribeira da Janela: Across the highplateau to the north coast

The bus takes us to the highplateau Paul da Serra. Here we have fantastic views in the valley of Ribeira Brava and São Vicente. We ride under laurel trees, which are a several hundred years old. The descent to Ribeira da Janela offers great views to the coast. From there the bus takes us back to the Bikestation.

Pico do Arieiro: At the third highest peak

The transfer bus takes us on approx. 1000 m to the Abrigo do Pastor. From there we ride steadily uphill through the ecological park to the third highest peak in Madeira, the Pico do Arieiro (1818 m). With view to Funchal on downhill passages, trails and Levada ways we ride back to Caniço de Baixo.

Santana: Deep gorges and a spectacular coastal descent

We start in Cortado in Faial and ride uphill to the Levada do Caldeirão Verde and further on to the Parque Florestal das Queimadas.

The many vantage points offer wonderful views - this compensates for the hard physical work. Past the Casa de Colmo in Santana our way leads us downwards to the sea on the first way, which connected all villages on Madeira.

Chão dos Terreiros - Trompica: On the Pico da Suna

The minibus takes us to “Quinta Grande”. From here we will go through Terreiros, Lugar da Serra and Fontes, before the difficult climb to the “Chão dos Terreiros” (1436m) begins. Our tour continues in direction of Boca da Corrida, past Jardim da Serra, a sidetrip to Cabo Girão and is ending in the bay of Câmara de Lobos. With the minibus we go back to Caniço de Baixo or, if there is any power left, you can also go back by bike.
